In this introduction to Western Calligraphy, we understand calligraphy to be the art of gesture. In this class our calligraphy is dependent upon tools, materials and a system of movement involving touch.
1) Sharpness! Sharpness relates to tools and materials. We explore the kinds of marks you can cultivate with different tools and materials with an emphasis on achieving a sharp mark with the broad-edged pen.
2) Unity! Unity relates to the design of letters both as individual forms and as words, sentences, and paragraphs. In this class a method of analyzing calligraphic letterforms is introduced through a very close look at Italic cursive calligraphy.
3) Freedom! Allows us to bring our sense of sharpness and unity to a personal expression of design and form through gesture.
4) Resolution! In this last class, we look at how to resolve and finish a calligraphic inscription.
