This course is designed to delve into approaches, methods, materials, issues and ideas about landscape painting. This is not an introductory course, but an exploration of contemporary landscape painting. We will explore a variety of ways to look at and paint landscapes and all the various elements that make up the natural world, including environmental themes. Subjects might include close-up studies of leaves, portraits of trees, painting rivers and waterways, open spaces, or expansive landscapes. We will paint from photo references, from still life, or from your imagination. Each project will be supplemented with examples by contemporary artists and will include a bit of art history, composition, colour theory and the expressive use of colour. We’ll use acrylic or gouache paint. Painting experience is recommended. A supply list will be provided.
Notes about this workshop:
Students should bring their own preferred painting supplies. Some supplies are available for use in the studio, and the instructor will also be supplying a variety of tools to experiment with.
