In this 3-day program, artist Marlene Collins will guide students through the exploration of a variety of materials including encaustic painting, block printing, and pastel painting. The learning and exploration in this workshop is gently directed so students can experience success, yet still have the joy of self-expression.

Introduction to Encaustic Painting
Students will learn how to work with encaustic including which tools to use, what makes a painting surface, and supplies required to create a painting. We will start by learning the basics of layering and fusing and as the day progresses, other techniques and materials will be introduced including pastel and pencil, intaglio, collage, image and text transfer – even how to embed small objects.

Introduction to Block Printing
Students will create a design on paper, which they will transfer to a lino block and carve out. The printing block will then be ready for inking and transferring onto a surface. At each stage, we will discuss the range of possibilities available to the printmaker. The carving process, cutting tools, inks, brayers, and what to print on.

Introduction to Chalk Pastel Painting
Pastels are versatile medium that work great for drawing and painting – lovely in the studio or quite easy to pack up for a plein air adventure. There is a wide array of pastels available from hard to buttery soft, to pastel pencil. Each has a specific application. Learn the different strokes and techniques used to achieve the results you want as we work through a couple of projects together. A great opportunity for exploration and expression. Drawing skills are not necessary to achieve great results with this medium
