In this full-day intermediate-level workshop, students will learn and explore different methods of adding character to their pots by creating a range of surface textures and then expanding the form from the interior to add an organic and dynamic character. Topics will include exploring mark-making tools and learning to create your own, prepping your base form to support each technique, then applying faceting, slip, scraping, and sodium silicate to the pots.
In the morning, we will start by prepping our clay (expect to use a full bag!) and discussing tool making, then proceed to the first set of instructor demonstrations followed by an open period for practice, experimentation, and individual instructor support There will be an hour for lunch and rest, then we will follow a similar format in the afternoon. The lessons are planned to allow students to build off skills learned from the previous technique, and participants will be encouraged to experiment and play. Emphasis will be on learning and iteration, not on creating finished work.
Students must have previously taken a wheel class and should be able to consistently throw a 700g-800g even-walled cylinder for an optimal experience in this class. Participants should purchase a fresh bag of M340 clay to bring to class. No M390 please.
