Still life painting is making a big comeback with contemporary artists taking a fresh new look at ordinary objects. Shiny wrapped candies, jars of pickles, a row of glazed donuts, a bundle of bubble wrap, a stack of fancy teacups, a hyper realistic typewriter … these ordinary objects are all the subject matter of gorgeous new paintings.

In this six week course we will work from ordinary objects such as a pair of boots, a stack of books, a cut avocado or a bit of driftwood. Learners will be introduced to contemporary still life artists, learn how to make a strong composition, learn to use lines and shapes to greatest advantage, and learn how to best use colour, contrast and temperature to make extraordinary paintings from ordinary objects.

Notes about this workshop:

• Some supplies are included and available in the studio to use ( ie. acrylic mediums, brushes, some paints, palettes, water containers) but students are encouraged to bring their favourite materials - paints, brushes, surfaces, rags and water containers. The workshop includes 2 5x7 canvas boards, and 1 6x6 canvas.
