This is a 5 half-day kids camp for 8-12 year olds to learn about a variety of mediums and techniques used in making art. Encaustic, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, block printing and the many variants and options contemporary practice has brought to the arts, will be included in this fast moving and engaging camp. Students will dig in and explore a new medium and its variants every day!

Day 1 - Acrylic Painting

Our acrylic painting day is super fun because our famous artist influences are Wayne Thiebaud (in honour of pop art tradition we will paint a still life of real cupcakes) and Canadian First Nation artist Norval Morrisseau. Morrisseau’s style uses bright colours and thick black outlines which students are confident emulating.

Day 2 - Encaustic Painting

Encaustic painting is an ancient technique that involves heat and wax – it is unlike working with any other medium. It is a very tactile and physical experience. We’ll talk about the history; ancient Egyptian mummy portraits and touch on professional artists such as Janise Yntema and Esther Geller. Students will learn to work with the encaustic paint in the morning and explore mixed media techniques such as image transfer and collage in the afternoon.

Day 3 - Watercolour Painting

Students will cover the foundational techniques of good watercolour practice; they will also get to experience plein air painting. There is no better way to teach the effects of light on colour. The works of Paul Klee, Kandinsky and Turner will be explored, so expect to see a few glowing fish, musical shapes and stormy seas!

Day 4 - Block Printing

Another super engaging way to make art is block printing which includes designing and carving a block, inking it and printing it. We’ll have some fun with multiples a la Andy Warhol.

Day 5 - Chalk Pastel and Oil Pastel

The pastel portion of the camp includes a bit more drawing instruction, some scratch, blending and oil techniques. We’ll play with mixed media including paint and collage. We can’t talk about pastels without bringing up the works of Van Gogh and Degas, and trying some of their techniques.
