Pottery Handbuilding Series

Thursdays, February 11, 18 & 25 | 6:30pm – 9:30pm
$195/person | supplies included
Ages 14+ | maximum 6 participants (pre-registration required)

Please note that we are unable to offer refunds on workshops and programming.

This 3-part pottery series will allow participants to experience and build on handbuilding skills including preparing clay, using studio equipment, and exploring surface decoration with texture and colour underglaze. We'll work at a steady pace with the goal to learn a variety of buildable techniques and skills to create functional forms and vessels. The class is designed for you to be guided by the building techniques, but free to choose your own projects with some suggested options. For example: push plates could be a soap dish or ring dish.

Students will learn how to use molds and forms, studio equipment like the slab roller and extruder and will have a small intro to glazing one of their own pieces. The other pieces will be processed and clear glazed by the instructor. Participates can expect to bring home 4-6 completed pieces.

Here are the projects we will work towards at each class:
Week 1: Pinch pots and push plates
Week 2: Handled mug and lidded jar
Week 3: Serving bowl & glaze demo

Notes about this workshop

  • Please note clay is a unique material. It has risks of cracking or breaking during the process and may not come out of the kiln as planned. However your new skills will help you to make more exciting pottery projects in the future.

  • The process of drying, firing, and glazing ceramics requires some time and patience, especially in a busy volunteer-run studio. Because of this, it may take several weeks for your finished work to be ready for pickup. We will contact you when your pieces are ready!

  • Workshop registration fees are non-refundable

  • In accordance with Government of Yukon regulations, masks are mandatory for all participants who are able to wear them. To learn more about how we're staying safe in our studio, visit www.artsunderground.ca/covid-19
