This course will get you using your acrylic paint in new ways from thin washes, to heavy impasto. We’ll experiment with a variety of techniques such as sgraffito, scraping, layering, collaging, overpainting, dry brush, glazing and more. We’ll learn to use paint retarders, gel mediums, modelling paste, pumice and other materials in a variety of ways to boost your mark making vocabulary and your sense of design/composition.
Acrylic paint is really effective for use in non-representational work, so we’ll play around with collage, stencils, scratching and scraping into the paint, layering and more. For subject matter, we will work from still life, projected images, ideas, and your imagination.
Come learn to get the best possible use out of your paints, learn new mark-making and colour-mixing techniques, learn how the different surfaces work with the paint, and see the work of international artists who are using this medium to its fullest.
Each week we’ll look at the work of several artists to draw inspiration from, then have a technical demonstration followed by individual projects based around a theme. Some projects will require prep at home prior to class.
Notes about this workshop:
Some supplies are included and available in the studio to use ( ie. acrylic mediums, brushes, some paints, palettes, water containers) but students are encouraged to bring their favourite materials - paints, brushes, surfaces, rags and water containers. Use the best quality paint you can afford for the best results.
When you sign up for this workshop, please note that your email will be added to a class-specific newsletter, which we will only use to contact you regarding this workshop. You can unsubscribe yourself from the newsletter at any time.
