In the Yukon, we are surrounded by natural landscapes that can feel larger than life. The environment around us touches all aspects of our lives, and inspires creativity for many artists. While we are physically close to these majestic landscapes, our experiences of them are increasingly mediated by modern technology.

Whether we’re taking cell phone photos after scaling a mountain, sharing a great view with friends on Zoom, using GPS to plot an adventurous path, or texting friends to plan a hunting trip, new technologies have become a part of the way we experience our natural environments. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we explore the world digitally more and more, visiting landscapes online that we can’t see in person.

Landscape art often presents the natural world as distinct from the digital world, but the digital world increasingly influences how we experience the natural.

In this exhibition, Yukon Art Society members use a wide range of media to explore the theme Green/Screen, referencing both natural elements (the “green”) and digital/technological elements (the “screen”).

YUKON ART SOCIETY
The Yukon Art Society was founded in April of 1970. Not only is it the oldest visual arts organization in the Yukon, but with a membership of around 150 members, it is the largest. The size and longevity of Yukon Art Society can be explained in part by our inclusiveness policy. Any visual artist, at any stage, working in any medium, is welcome to become a member of Yukon Art Society.
