February 7 - March 1, 2025
Opening Reception: February 7, 5-7pm

Gold Rush? More like Old Rush, amirite? 1896 is played the heck out. We were so sick of hearing about it, we decided we needed to be the change we wanted to see in the world and we published It’s Weird Up Here—an illustrated collection of northern stories that get down to the brass tacks of what the territory is really about. Namely? The odd, amazing, everyday experiences of the people, places, plants, animals and things that give the Yukon its unique character. Not only are these stories way more interesting than gold, they represent an infinite resource that’s easier and more environmentally-friendly to extract. It’s an all-boom/no-bust proposition!

It’s Weird Up Here was one of three recipients of the Yukon 125 Prize, awarded by the Yukon government last year. The Weird project team (illustrator Tedd Tucker and writer Amy Kenny) spent 2024 conducting interviews, archival deep-dives, micro-film hunts and museum visits. The result is a collection of tales that combine writing, journalism, illustration, collage and (in at least one case) grocery store fanfic to offer an historic record that blends history, imagination, and art. Think of it as a yearbook Frankensteined together with a Pierre Berton anthology, comics and postsecret.com.

It's Weird Down Here is an Arts Underground show highlighting 10 of the 100 stories interpreted by the collection. A sort of exhibition-y amuse-bouche to give you a taste of the particular brand of shenanigans you’ll find in the pages of It’s Weird Up Here.

Amy Kenny

Amy Kenny is a Whitehorse-based writer who almost certainly shares with your dad a love of puns and the tendency to talk to anyone and everyone to find out their story. She has a bachelor of journalism, a master of fine arts in creative writing, and a top contributor badge on the local-buy-and-sell page. She’s currently selling nothing, but ISO a vintage couch.

Tedd Tucker

Tedd Tucker is a Whitehorse-based freelance illustrator, designer and former red rover champion (now retired). He moved to the Yukon 14 years ago after a shitty breakup and fell in love with Britt, the community and nature. Tedd has worked on national ad campaigns, exhibited work across the Yukon, published two children’s books, and co-founded an illustration collective to help create new opportunities for aspiring artists (and himself).
