Colin Dorward | New Pottery

Colin Dorward
New Pottery

EDGE GALLERY, APRIL 11 - May 6, 2023

This exhibition represents Colin's return to the medium after a seven year hiatus. The work is an exploration towards a voice that includes elements of his painting practice, which has been his primary medium for the last two decades. Unlike painting, however, this work is committed to functionality. In a cultural-climate where paintings are not in high demand, perhaps pottery provides a more practical route for fine-craftwork to enter the home.

COLIN DORWARD

I was born in Edmonton in 1979. From age three till eight, my mother raised the family in Singapore while my father worked in oil, after which we returned to Edmonton. There, I later acquired an Engineering diploma before understanding that my only survivable future was in the arts. I then did my BFA at Emily Carr, Master's at uOttawa, and finally, PhD at Western. It seems that I was able to maintain a career in painting through support in academia. Along the way I was fortunate enough to receive many accolades in industry, including placement in the then nationally-celebrated RBC painting competition (twice), and acquisition by several public institutions including the National Gallery of Canada. Since moving to Whitehorse, I have diversified my practice and now work equally in painting, ceramics, and music.
