Hayley Thiesen/TSUN
Northern Animals

Edge Gallery, February 5 - 27, 2021

Hayley Thiesen/TSUN has been painting this style of animal portraits since 2018. She has almost exclusively used the photographic images of Steve Wilson and Nicolas Dory’s to build her body of work. She is extremely grateful for their kindness and support throughout.

Her goal with each image is to capture the animal’s unique spirit, personality, and dignity. She then attempts to pair each portrait with a well-known celebrity, athlete, or musician who she believes share similar attributes. Hayley is fascinated by the connections, and affectations viewers make to the portrait of an animal when it has a familiar name.

The eye colour of each animal is of a brilliant turquoise, highlighted with gold. This is a trademark of her portraiture work.

HAYLEY THIESEN/TSUN
Hayley Thiesen/TSUN a visual artist based in Whitehorse, Yukon. She has been a member of this unique northern community, and an art educator at a local high school since 2013. TSUN is the phonetic spelling of her last name and is preferred by the artist.

Hayley TSUN is originally from the North Thomson/Okanagan region of British Columbia. She grew up in a very small logging community just outside of Kamloops B.C. Art was always her favorite subject in school. She was blessed to grow up with horses and has many fond memories of small-town life.

Hayley studied visual arts, and literature at Thomson Rivers University, in Kamloops, B.C. She obtained her high school teaching credentials from the University of Victoria. Hayley has taught and lived in several small communities in British Columbia, as well as Seoul South Korea and Dalian, China. Living overseas afforded her the incredible opportunity to travel all-over South-East Asia and experience many different forms of art, culture and artmaking. It took many years of wandering, to find a place that really felt like a home. Hayley is proud to call the Yukon home.

Hayley paints on the weekends, at her kitchen table. During the week, you can find her interacting with her students at F.H Collins Secondary School, here in Whitehorse.
