Superposition
Edge Gallery, June 4 - 26, 2021
In physics, (speaking as a casual enthusiast of particle physics) a superposition is the physical paradox of two distinct states, when added together equal a new valid state.
The multiple states correspond to different possible outcomes. The superposition state exists until it interacts with or is observed by an external viewer, after which the superposition collapses and a single state or outcome remains.
It is a blurred and complex model of representing reality. And while superposition exists in a subatomic level, the mind also presents possibilities in superposition in the form of relational interpretation. Many future possibilities are apparent to us until we actually observe and experience a moment, in which the superposition collapses and we are faced with our own singular reality.
JESSE DEVOST
I have been fascinated by the cognitive interpretation of moments and places throughout my art practice.
My paintings and photographs either illustrate a location or human impact upon it, or explore the world of our minds, especially the realm of dreams and fading thoughts. My journey as an artist has thus far gone deeper into the fundamentals of process and capture, working increasingly towards more manual and rudimentary methods to create imagery and interpretations.
For this exhibition, I have gone in the opposite path in some instances, embracing technology, seeking the assistance of others and more stringently questioning my approach or motivation.
The coexistence of employing a fundamentalist do-it-yourself approach, with the assistance of technology and others’ help is akin to a superposition in action.
I have lived and worked in Whitehorse since 1998, grew up in the woods of Hornby Island, and I have travelled to many places – remotely within the territory and internationally, mostly in Asia and the south Pacific. Experiencing different locations and trying to remember them is the primary inspiration behind my work.
