Wuthering Beauty
Focus Gallery, April 5 - 27, 2019
My sculptural assemblages are the reshaping of decayed organics and discarded artifacts. I illuminate the overlooked beauty under our feet and the mystery in the abandoned. My work references history, spirituality and symbolism in search of deeper meanings and ancient teachings.
The figurative subjects in my work reveal my alter egos who at some point take over the creative process. Along the way I have also discovered that my subconscious likes to choose objects with holes.
I work piece-meal and on many compositions at once because the methods of assemblage have numerous, interwoven stages such as modeling, deconstruction and assembly. Needles and my hands are my favored tools.
I create to connect with others and to give physical form to my sense of awe and curiosity.
CATHERINE JAMNICKY
Dramatic and otherworldly is how Catherine’s sculptural assemblages have been described. Her deep-rooted passion for museum collections and a reverence for the natural world draw her to use artifacts and organics in her compositions. She transforms the decayed and discarded to reveal an unexpected beauty, in the afterlife.
Catherine is proud to live in the extremes of Yukon, Canada where the dangers of the surrounding wilderness influence her work.
As a child and later with her young son she built miniature dioramas for entertainment. Her love of small details and intricate handwork extended to years of practice in the fiber arts. She is fascinated by the discoveries in the creative process and challenged by the assemblage of diverse materials.
The menacing beauty of the late Alexander McQueen’s fashion designs and his theatrical shows inform Catherine’s work.
