Connections: Moments

FOCUS GALLERY, JANUARY 6 - 28, 2023

Painting is a dance between intent and happenstance. When I paint, I need to allow the creative process, the unknown future, to guide at least some of the work.

In past work, I have taken formal rules found in various forms of music and poetry and applied these rules to my painting. These canvasses have a sense of rhythm, metre, and mood found in the inspiring art form.

Most recently, though, I have found myself drawn to painting the landscape I am in (Yukon Territory). The sky and light effect upon the landscape and its objects are inspiring for me. The natural phenomena that surprise me each day, are a constant source for painting and creating.

It is important for me to work in layers of paint, translucent through opaque. Layers of paint suggest the passing of time, a timelessness found when one really observes where they are. Experience, and a sense of feeling, are what I ultimately hope to express.
