Yukon Illustration Coalition | Dreamland: Demystifying Digital Illustration
DREAMLAND: DEMYSTIFYING DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION
Edge Gallery, February 4 - 26, 2022
An exhibition of new work by members of The Yukon Illustration Coalition, featuring Teagan Beemer, Lara Bode, Dan Brown Hozjan, Asia Hyde, Sheelah Tolton, and Tedd Tucker. All the illustrations in this exhibition were created using digital tools in some way (ex. digital drawing tablets or iPads with digital drawing software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Clip Studio Paint, Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Krita, etc.)
This medium was chosen because The Yukon remains about ten years behind other places in Canada when it comes to both understanding what digital art is, and how it’s actually created. Because of this, digital artists often find themselves up against obstacles that fine artists don’t have to face. People immediately know what acrylic or watercolour painting is, and fine artists don’t have to explain how their work is created for it to be understood. Digital art is often not taken as seriously, and there is a common misconception that the computer is creating the art for you. That is absolutely not the case. Most digital art is created with a pen shaped stylus, acting like a mouse. The artist draws or paints their piece in a similar way that someone would if they were using paints or pencils.
The goal with this exhibition is to demystify digital illustration. We want to bring more understanding and appreciation to the work and craftsmanship that goes into creating illustrations this way. We want to fully expose the process of how these types of works are created, and show that they are fully handmade. This will provide a unique opportunity for the viewer to be able to see what happens behind the scenes when it comes to creating artwork this way, and we hope to foster a new interest and understanding.
The Yukon Illustration Coalition (YILCO) was formed in September 2020 with the goal to provide illustrators living in the territory the opportunity to collaborate and get support from their peers in their respective practices. We are an inclusive group that accepts membership from any interested persons hoping to improve their craft and have the chance to get feedback from other illustrators.
